Brown, Ila L. – Obituary

Baker City, Oregon

Ila L. Brown, 69, died Sept. 28, 2006, in Baker City after a long battle with cancer.

Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Presbyterian Church in Halfway. Interment will be at Pine Haven Cemetery in Halfway. Friends are invited to join the family after the service for a reception at the Presbyterian Fellowship Hall.

Ila was born on Dec. 1, 1936, at Caldwell, Idaho. She was the second daughter of Irvin and Edith Wingerd. She attended grade school at Bellevue and high school at Hailey, Idaho. Ila was married to Robert “Bob” Brown on June 18, 1954. The couple moved to Halfway in 1957 to begin work on the dams. They spent the rest of their lives in the valley except for 2 years – 1967 to 1970 – when they moved to Madras where Bob was the farm foreman for Hay Creek Ranch.

Upon returning to Halfway in 1970, Ila and Bob ran the Union Oil Distributor business until 1988 when Bob died. Ila continued on for an additional two years before selling the business and retiring.

Ila enjoyed camping in many areas around the valley, hunting in the fall with family and friends, mushrooming, and just going for drives around the valley to relax. She enjoyed working in her yard, cooking and canning for her family, and taking care of her home.

She was involved in the Hells Canyon Junior Rodeo, the Grange, and PTA (when the children were younger). Ila has also been very involved in her grandchildren’s activities.

The family wishes to thank Kate Grace, physicians assistant, for her care and compassion and the staff at Settler’s Park Assisted Living in Baker City for their care during the last two months of Ila’s life.

Survivors include two of her three daughters and their families, Mary Moody and Jess Goin of Halfway and Sheri and Dean Sass of Boise; her grandchildren, Cortni Harris of Halfway, Jill Sass of Nampa, Idaho, Ryan Sass of Meridian, Idaho, Megan Neal of Halfway and Billy Neal of Halfway; her two sisters, Della Kimbrough of Twin Falls, Idaho, and Martha Perry and her husband, Clyde, of Star, Idaho; one brother-in-law and his wife, William and Darlene Brown of Twin Falls, Idaho; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ila was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; her daughter, Becky; and son-in-law, Fred Moody.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Halfway Ambulance, American Cancer Society or the charity of one’s choice through Tami’s Pine Valley Funeral Home, P.O. Box 543, Halfway, OR 97834.
