Bailey, George Ellis – Obituary

Funeral services for George E. Bailey, 80, will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25 (today) at the Beatty Chapel. Pastor Joe Jewett will officiate with interment in Mount Hope Cemetery. Mr. Bailey was born June 25, 1884 [1888], at Butte, Mont., and died Monday morning [February 23, 1965] at his home, after a long illness.

He attended schools in Butte, Canada, and Baker, and came to Baker with his father, when he was 12 years old. After his schooling he worked as a gold miner in Baker County until 1933, when he became a member of the Baker City Police Department, acting as a desk sergeant for most of the time. He was married to Hattie Anderson in Baker May 21, 1917, and retired from the police force in 1943, but continued his mining activities occasionally during his retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Hattie Bailey, Baker; by his daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth O. Keller, Baker; his sister, Mrs. Mary Wilson, Nelson, B.C., Canada; his half-sister, Lois Bailey, Portland; and a niece, Violet Erwin, Burke, Ida.
