Elgin, Oregon

Frances Elizabeth Adams, 90, a former Baker County resident, died Dec. 11, 2004, at Elgin.

There will be a celebration of her life Saturday at 11 a.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St., La Grande. Sally Wiens will officiate. Interment will be at the Elgin Cemetery.

Visitations will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Frances Elizabeth Adams was born on Feb. 4, 1914, at Keating to Frank and Elizabeth Beber Gilkson. She attended school at North Powder until her senior year when she moved to Elgin. She played on the 1932 Elgin High School championship basketball team.

After graduation, Frances met and married Ernest Adams at Union in 1933. Together the couple moved to Portland where Frances worked in the shipyards during World War II.

After the war ended, Frances and Ernest returned to Elgin where together they opened Adams Supply Store. Frances was the bookkeeper and operator until her retirement in 1976. The couple traveled widely together, including trips to China, Hawaii, Alaska, and Mexico.

She was very involved in the Good Sam Club, was a member of the Elgin Stampeders, the Elgin Stampeders drill team and the Women’s Service club. She enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, playing cards, riding horses and spending time with family.

Survivors include her husband, Ernest Adams of Elgin; children and their spouses, Farrell and Jerry Maxwell of Haines, Betty and Gale Martin of Elgin, and Teri Adams and her companion, Randy High, of Portland; grandchildren, Cheri Maxwell, Allen Maxwell, Marce Maxwell, Sheri Anderson and Adam Erickson; great-grandchildren, Jarrod Maxwell, Robie Maxwell and Tymra Anderson; and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Nellie Dyke; and one brother, Ross Gilkson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Elgin Ambulance, Elgin High School FFA or Future Business Leaders of America through Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St., La Grande, OR 97850.
