Biographical Sketch of Mathew Zeman

Zeman, Mathew; iron business; born, Probulov, Bohemia, Feb. 15, 1860; son of John and Anna Zeman; educated, public and high schools of Pisek, Bohemia; after leaving school, married, July 20, 1889, Miss M. Svoboda; issue, three children; Miroslav, graduate of public schools and Central Institute, now a student in Technical High School, in Prague, Bohemia, Ladimir, who was the first graduate of the Cleveland Technical High School, attended Case School of Applied Science and is now at Cornell University, Otokar, graduate of public schools and now a student at East Technical High School; after he left school he went to Prague, Bohemia, to learn the iron manufacturing trade; remained two years; then entered the Austrian Army to serve his military term; because of mechanical knowledge was sent to Turkey and was kept busy in erecting hospitals and other buildings for the Australian Government for three years; after army discharge remained in Turkey for four years, as building contractor of steel structures; then came to Cleveland with The Excelsior Iron Works Co., as foreman of the first steel structure, The Perry-Payne Bldg.; remained with this firm ten years; in 1895, established an iron manufacturing plant of his own on Broadway; in 1905, formed a stock company, and erected a new factory on Union Ave.; in 1908, sold his interests and returned to Europe, traveling in France, Germany and Bohemia; returned to Cleveland and established The Zeman Iron Works offices E. 55th and Broadway, manufacturing all kinds of architectural and ornamental iron specialties; member Knights of Pythias, the C. S. P. S., and the Bohemian Turners; his association with so many concerns and in so many different countries, has given him success.
