Gardner, was mayor of Cleveland two terms; in 1860, he formed partnership with M. B. Clark and John D. Rockfeller, in the grain business, continuing four years, when Mr. Rockefeller went into the oil business; 1886-1888, sec’y and treas. Walker Mnfg. Co., manufacturing conveying machinery; 1889-1890, member firm Clark & Gardner, flour millers and grain dealers; 1890-1900, sec’y Cleveland Printing & Publishing Co.; 1900-1904, pres. of the Iron & Steel Press Co.; publishers The Iron Trade Review, The Foundry, and other trade papers; 1904-1913, pres. The Gardner Printing Co., owning one of the largest printing plants in Ohio; vice pres. The Robert S. Den-ham Co.; member Ben. Franklin Club of America; trustee Association for the Blind; member Zeta Psi college Fraternity; member of Brooks Corps, the Cleveland Gattling Gun Battery, Chamber of Commerce, Union, Fellow Craft, Rowfant, Yacht, Long-worth Canoe, Mayfield Country, and Cleveland Automobile Clubs.
