Monty Lee Hack, 68, of Tonopah, Nev., a former Baker County resident, died Jan. 26, 2007, at his home after a short illness.
Monty’s body will be cremated and his remains will be scattered at the cow camp he loved on a ranch near Tonopah.
There will be a celebration of his life at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Quail Ridge Golf Course Clubhouse. The family invites friends to join them to eat, drink and “share our memories of our beloved brother.”
Monty was born April 9, 1939, to Laurance and Shirley Hack. He was raised in the Keating Valley and attended schools at Pondosa, Keating and Baker.
He worked on ranches in this area as a young cowhand and drove truck for several years. He returned to ranch work at Tonopah.
He loved the life of a cowboy most when he was out in the desert away from cities and people where he could ride all day – just him, his horse and his dog. He loved to hunt and was never without venison to go with his favorite meal of beans and taters.
“We will miss most his slow smile and the long windy stories he loved to tell,” his family said.
Monty lived the simple life of a cowboy.
Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Nancy; his mother, Shirley Hack Garland of Baker City; daughters, Cary of Hillsboro and Stacy of Portland; sons, Wade of Athena and Beau of Portland; brothers, Larry Hack of North Powder, Gary Hack of Umatilla, Chuck Hack of Pendleton, John Hack of Goldendale, Wash., Rick Hack of Baker City, Dave Hack of Star, Idaho, and Jimmy Coe of Baker City; sisters, Linda Gorham Silva of Haines, Shelley Bowman and Cathy Hack, both of Baker City, and Debbie Murrill of Sandy; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Laurance Hack.
