Stanley Bruce Horn, 74, of Elgin died Nov. 19. An inurnment begins at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Elgin Cemetery with a celebration of life following at 1:45 p.m. at the Elgin Community Center. Loveland Funeral Chapel and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
Stanley was born May 16, 1933, to Clarence and Lillie Southard Horn in Kimball, Neb. When he was 4, his family moved to High Valley near Union, and when he was 5 or 6, they moved to Cricket Flat near the breaks of the Minam River. He spent the remainder of his childhood years there and attended Pine Grove School District.
Stanley married Barbara Janet Thompson on July, 22, 1950. The couple lived in Elgin where Stanley worked at Thorn’s Box Factory. In 1951, the couple moved to Hermiston where Stanley worked at the Ordinance Depot, and in 1956, they moved to Renton, Wash., where he worked for Boeing as a riveter.
Three years later, Stanley helped build the Brownlee Dam in Hells Canyon and then worked for Eastern Oregon Television in La Grande. In the 1960s, Stan entered the logging industry as a heavy equipment operator. He also worked for the Boise Cascade road crew and the Oregon state highway department.
After 20 years in Elgin, the couple moved to Dallas in 1980 where Stanley logged until 1988. That year, they moved to Umatilla where Stanley worked for Waltche Farms and Simplot as a truck driver. Stanley retired and moved to Baker City in 2003. He and Barbara lived there until 2006, then returned to Elgin.
Stanley spent many days in his boat fishing on the Columbia River with his sons and grandsons. He loved to garden. Those who knew him say last year’s garden was quite a sight to see. They say that to protect his veggies, he built the tallest and most elaborate deer fence in the country.
His love and skill for hunting created strong bonds with his family, and his colorful stories of days past were always a highlight for his grandchildren. He loved to enjoy a good cup of coffee with those he held dear. Those who knew Stanley say he will be remembered for his love for children, sense of humor and his desire for adventure.
Stanley is survived by his wife, Barbara “Bobbie” of Elgin; children, Connie and Jim Tucker of Elgin, Bruce and Melissa Horn of Elgin, Larry and Peggy Horn of Erda, Utah, Lillie and Curtis Hurst of Elgin, Emmett and Becky Horn of Baker City and Chris Horn of Elgin; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three sisters; three brothers; and too many nieces and nephews to count. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Lillie Horn; two sisters; and three brothers.
