Ancestors Name: HARMON, Emmeline
Nee: WESTBROOK
Date of Birth: 1821
State: Michigan
Comment: census records show she was born in NY an early genealogy record shows she married Dennis Harmon in Wayne Co. Mi. 1838 Plymouth Mi. We don't know who her parents are. We don't know that she was native American, but there is a controversey on this subject. Some say she was of the Pottowatomy tribes. There is no death record for her here in Michigan, but there is a burial place at the East Dayton Cemetery in Wells Twsp, Tuscola county Michigan. The 1870 census says she is white. Talk of her being an indian has been passed down through the families. When her husband, Dennis Harmon came to Michigan from Phelps,Ontario Co,NY , there was a Thomas Westbrook family who came to Canton Michigan about the same time as the Harmons in 1831 where both families got land grants there in Canton. Their land was located in Canton next to each other. I have always assumed that Emmeline Westbrook was a daughter of Thomas and Sophia Westbrook who lived next door to the family of Dennis Harmon in Canton. I have never been able to prove she was a daughter of Thomas Westbrook, and others claim she was of the red race. CAn anyone help on this delema??
