Settlements
A complete listing of all the Indian villages,
towns and settlements as listed in Handbook of Americans North of Mexico.
Cawasumseuck. Given by Williams in 1643 as the name by
which some tribe, settlement, or band of New England Indians called themselves (Mass.
Hist. Soc. Coll., 1st s., in, 205, 1794). To what Indians he refers is
unknown, but it is possibly to some then living on Cawsumsett Neck, near
Pawtucket r., R. I.
Charlestown. A township in Washington co., R. I.,
where a few mixed bloods, the remnants of the
Narraganset and Nehantic, still live. (J. M.)
Chaubatick. A village of the Narraganset or Nehantic in
1651 , probably within a few miles of Providence, R. 1. Williams (1651) in
Mass. Hist. Soc. Coll. 3d s., ix, 292, 1846.
Coaxet. A village of Praying Indians formerly near
Little Compton, Newport co., R. I., subject to the Wampanoag. As late as 1685 it
contained about 100 adults.
Cowsumpsit. Mentioned in 1664 as if a village subject
to the chief of the
Wampanoag, in Rhode Island. Deed of 1664 in Drake, Bk. Inds., bk. 8, 14,
1848.
