Biographical Sketch of Mrs. John R. McIntosh

Maria L. Seguichy, born in Salina District of the Cherokee Nation, educated at the Female Seminary and Bacone University; taught school in Cooweescoowee and Delaware Districts; married at Chelsea, January 25, 1891 John Ross McIntosh, born Feb. 26, 1866.

They are the parents of. Beatrice N., born December 14 ,1891, married Paul W. Fry, and Ethel R., born December 21, 1902, married Roy Johnson.

The proper name of Seguichys is Cummings. But as is often the case, the Cherokee name was universally used. Mrs. McIntosh’s maternal grandfather was Joseph Powell, brother of Captain William Powell of the United States Army (1839). Her brother Joseph R. Sequichy was editor of The Cherokee Advocate 1897-8. He died August 4, 1920. Mrs. McIntosh’s name is Waleeah.

John Ross McIntosh was elected member of the Council from Cooweescoowee District August 2, 1897 and was elected by that body as Speaker. He was elected Treasurer of Rogers County in November 1920. His Father, John McIntosh, who died July 17, 1916 was the last Chief Justice of the Cherokee Nation.

Mr. and Mrs. McIntosh speak both the English and Cherokee language with more than ordinary proficiency.
