Albuquerque Indian School Gallery

Photographs of the Albuquerque Indian School, which was established in 1881 to provide off-reservation industrial training to the Indians of the Southwest. By 1912, the school had 8 primary grades and over 300 students; by 1925 enrollment increased to over 800 students and grades 11 and 12 were added. The Albuquerque Indian School continued operating until 1982, when its program was transferred to the Santa Fe Indian School.

  1. I am researching Jesse “Cab” Renick. He is of Choctaw/Chickasaw Tribal descent from Oklahoma. I was told that he worked for the Albuquerque Indian School. I am not sure if he worked for the Santa Fe Indian School or not? My interest is to see if he has any photographs that I may collect/reproduce.
I interviewed Mr. Renick in Bartlesville, OK in the early 1980s. And, I am currently working on a documentary of his life. I was told that he adopted “six” Native American children. Possibly they may have been members of some tribal nations in or around Albuquerque or Santa Fe, NM.

  2. I was a Music Teacher at the Albuquerque Indian School during the years 1962-1965 and would
love to hear from any students attending during that time.

    1. Hello, I’m just wondering what happened to all the school records for all the students that attend there?. School attendance, registrations and such. Was there like year book for students too.

CRUZ SANDOVAL: My grandmother graduated from the 8th grade and then Albuquerque High School but continued to board at the Indian School. Around 1917-1918. Any info or pictures would be greatly appreciated. Her sisters also attended. Kathryn (died there) and Lucy.

    1. I have a grandmother whose name is Lucy (born 1911) and finished the 9th grade at Alburquerque Indian School… I dont know who maiden name or if she had siblings. Maybe it’s the same Lucy? Hope to hear a response and maybe confirm?
