Cathey, Laura Louise – Obituary

La Grande, Oregon

Laura Louise Cathey, 101, of Ontario and formerly of Baker City and La Grande, died April 28 in Ontario with family at her side.

Graveside services will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at Mount Hope Cemetery in Baker City. Pastor Jon Privett will officiate. Following the services there will be a reception at the Church of the Nazarene in Baker City for family and friends. Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel in Payette, Idaho, is in charge ofarrangements.

Laura was born Nov. 1, 1906, to James and Hulda Ray in Rushville, Neb. She was the second of 12 children. Laura’s family moved to Montana when she was a teenager. She met Hugh Cathey, a Montana rancher, and they were married in October 1925. The couple raised five children: Velma Corwin, Lloyd Cathey, LaVern Cathey, Verla Boles and Sharon Derrick. Hugh died in 1958 and Laura never remarried. Laura lived inLa Grande for a while to be near family.

Laura was a devout Christian.

Survivors include one daughter, Verla Boles and her husband, Bill, of Baker City; son-in-law, Harley Derrick of Ontario; daughter-in-law, Maxine Cathey of La Grande; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; four children; three sisters; eight brothers; four grandsons; and onegranddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to any church or charity in care of Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, P.O. Box 730, Payette, Idaho 83661.
