Sarah J. Fisher Pioneer, Passes On Here Today
Sarah J. Fisher died about 1:30 o’clock this morning at 1501 U avenue. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Summerville chapel. The body was taken to the Snodgrass and Zimmerman mortuary.
Mrs. Fisher, born in Sullivan county, Missouri, March 2, 1859, was 77 years, 11 months and seven days of age, and was among the early pioneers of Oregon. She crossed the plains with her parents, Mr. And Mrs. Hiram McDonald with ox teams in 1864, landing in Linn county where they lived until 1872. She moved to Umatilla county and lived there one year, then came to the Grande Ronde valley settling near Summerville, Ore.
On Feb. 20, 1876, she married Enos Fisher on his farm two and a half miles north of Summerville where they lived until 1926. To this union seven children were born in Columbus, of Wallowa; Walter, of Sunnyside, Wash., George, of Portland; Etta Norman, of Summerville; Bessie Ingram, of La Grande, and Albert and Harley, deceased. Mr. Fisher passed away in December, 1920.
Mrs. Fisher lived on the farm until 1926. She then leased the farm and moved to La Grande where she lived until her death.
She had been seriously ill since Oct. 1, 1936, being in the hospital for 35 days and te rest of the time was cared for in her home.
Besides her five children, she is survived by nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; a brother, Geo. McDonald, of Summerville, and a sister, Ellen Oswald, of Summerville.
