Mattapoisett, Plymouth County,
Massachusetts
Was incorporated May 20, 1857. Previous to that time it had been for nearly
one hundred and seventy-five years, a part of Rochester. The first town meeting
was held in Purrington Hall, June 20, l857. The Indian word Mattapoisett
signified a place of rest. Mattapoisett was formerly justly celebrated for its
extensive ship-building operations. For several years this important business
has been very muck depressed.

Mo. of fever.
William H. Kinney, gunner, steamer Beaton, killed at Grand Gulf, Miss., April
29, 1863.
Elijah W. Randall, seaman, steamier Housatonic, off Charleston, S. C, April 19,
1863, of abscess.
