Mattapoisett, Plymouth County, Massachusetts

Was incorporated May 20, 1857. Previous to that time it had been for nearly one hundred and seventy-five years, a part of Rochester. The first town meeting was held in Purrington Hall, June 20, l857. The Indian word Mattapoisett signified a place of rest. Mattapoisett was formerly justly celebrated for its extensive ship-building operations. For several years this important business has been very muck depressed.

The following is a list of Mattapoisett citizens lost in the war of Rebellion:

John T. Barstow, K, 1st Reg., at Washington, Dec. 20, '62, of diarrhea.
Edward F. Barlow, E , 18th Reg., of starvation, at Andersonville, Sept. 3, 1864.
Wm. O. Dexter, E, 58th Reg., July 28, 1864, of fever, on board transport.
Charles H. Hayden, C, 29th Reg.
John A. LeBaron, H, 14th Reg., Point Lookout Hospital, Md,, Oct. 6, 1861.
Franklin A. Lobre, I, 3d Reg., Petersburg, Va., rebel hospital, Jan. 19, 1863.
Geo. D. Snow, D, 18th, killed at Fredericksburg, Va., Dec, 13, 1802.
Edward F. Snow, D, 18th Reg., at home, Sept. 6, 1864, of fever.
Ebenezer Tripp, G, 20th Reg., killed at Balls Bluffs, Oct. 21, 1861,
Wm. H. Taber, C, 7th Pa. Cav., Munfordsville Hospital, Ky., of fever, March 18, 1862.
Charles H. Tinkham, I, 3d Reg., Newborn, N.C., of fever, Nov. 30, 1S62.
Geo. W. Wilcox, D, 18th Reg., Christian Street Hospital, Phil., Aug. 23, 1 862.
Wm. S. Wilcox, 5th Battery, Falmouth Hospital, Nov. 28, 1862.
John Bates, steamer Henry Andrew, killed at Mosquito Inlet, Fla., March 22, 1862.
John S. Dennis, Acting Master, steamer Huntress, Feb. 22, 1805, at New Madrid, Mo. of fever.
William H. Kinney, gunner, steamer Beaton, killed at Grand Gulf, Miss., April 29, 1863.
Elijah W. Randall, seaman, steamier Housatonic, off Charleston, S. C, April 19, 1863, of abscess.
