Mattapoisett, Plymouth County, Massachusetts

Was incorporated May 20, 1857. Previous to that time it had been for nearly one hundred and seventy-five years, a part of Rochester. The first town meeting was held in Purrington Hall, June 20, l857. The Indian word Mattapoisett signified a place of rest. Mattapoisett was formerly justly celebrated for its extensive ship-building operations. For several years this important business has been very muck depressed.
