Sawyer Genealogy of Narraguagus Valley Maine

Josiah Sawyer, about 1757, came from Cape Elizabeth and settled near the Narraguagus river in what is now Milbridge Maine. His wife was Elizabeth, daughter of Jesse Brown. There were born to them four sons and four daughters:

  • Josiah Sawyer, Jr., m. Rebecca Grindle of Sedgwick. Their children were:
    1. George 2d Sawyer.
    2. Charles Sawyer.
    3. William 2d Sawyer.
    4. Elbridge Sawyer.
    5. Eben Sawyer.
    6. Philo Sawyer.
    7. Temperance Sawyer.
    8. Louisa Sawyer.
    9. Joanna Sawyer.
    10. Helen Sawyer.
    11. Rebecca Sawyer.
  • William Sawyer m. Sarah, daughter of Andrew Dyer. Their children were:
    1. Exie Sawyer m. William Bracket.
    2. Mary Sawyer m. John Sawyer.
    3. Henry Sawyer died unmarried.
    4. Harris Sawyer unmarried.
  • George B. Sawyer m. Mary Roberts of Cape Elizabeth, who is yet living at the age of 90. Their children:
    1. Catherine Sawyer m. Moses Wallace.
    2. Joseph W. Sawyer m. Mary Jane Wallace.
    3. William R. Sawyer m. Lucy Ann Gay.
    4. Stillman D. Sawyer m. Nancy Ray.
    5. Emery W. Sawyer m. Phebe Turner.
    6. Frank Sawyer m. Susan Wood.
    7. David Sawyer m. Henrietta Foster.
    8. Mary Ann Sawyer m. 1, Melville Nash, 2, Isaac McCollum.
    9. Phebe Helen Sawyer m. Myrick Preble.
  • John Sawyer m. Lydia Dyer. Children:
    1. Handy.

    3. Rebecca.
    4. Sarah.
  • Lydia Sawyer m. Josiah Grindel of Sedgwick.
  • Sally Sawyer m. Josiah Wallace, Jr. Their children:
    1. Joseph Wallace.
    2. Mary Wallace.
    3. Olive Wallace.
    4. Joanna Wallace.
  • Jane Sawyer m. Thomas Strout. Children:
    1. Hannah Strout.
    2. Maria Strout.
    3. Everett Strout.
    4. Joanna Strout.
    5. Elizabeth Strout.
    6. Amy Strout.
  • Hannah Sawyer m. 1, Henry Dyer, 2, French. Her children were, unknown by which husband:
    1. Rosilla.
    2. Jackson.

Joseph Sawyer came also from Cape Elizabeth at a date somewhat later than the coming of Josiah to Milbridge and settled at Dyer’s Bay in Steuben. What their relationship to each other was, I have not learned. Joseph m. Sarah Dyer, daughter of Henry and Batty Dyer, already mentioned in these chronicles. Their children were:

  1. Susanna Sawyer m. Nathaniel Ingersoll.
  2. Joseph Sawyer, father of the Sawyers of Addison Maine.
  3. Henry Sawyer m. Cynthia Foster and moved to Augusta.
  4. Nabby Sawyer m. ____ Dyer of Sullivan.
  5. Sally Sawyer m. Ambrose Coffin.
  6. Catherine Sawyer m. Amos Allen.
  7. Ebenezer Sawyer moved to Augusta.
  8. Lemuel B. Sawyer m.Handy ____.
  9. Annie Sawyer.

Joseph Sawyer m. second ____ and had:

  1. Daniel Sawyer.
  2. Annah L. Sawyer.
