Burke County came third in the list of the eight original counties cited in the first State Constitution of 1777. Prior to that time, under the Royal Province of Georgia, it was called St. George Parish, named after St. George, the patron saint of England. Many of Georgia's great Irish families came from old St. George Parish, descended from the original settlers of Queensborough, commonly known as the "Irish Town."
