What remains of the Georgia 1798 federal tax digests are at the Georgia
Department of Archives and History and available to researchers there
through microfilm copies, as part of the Archives general collection of
tax digests. The digest for Burke County is incomplete, obtaining only
some of the records of the first, second and fourth districts of the
undetermined number of districts to which the county was divided in 1798.
At least some of what has been found of this digest was discovered over
the years in the Richmond County courthouse. Although all of this digest
that has been found is now bound together and microfilmed as one document,
the discovery of this record in separate parts led to the slave returns
for the second district also being microfilmed elsewhere and until
recently incorrectly filed in the Microfilm Library's card catalogue as
Burke County Superior Court Slave List, c. 1798. All of the known
surviving remnants of the 1798 Burke County district tax digest can be
searched here.
