Worcester County MD

Worcester County MD, organized in 1742, occupies the extreme southeast corner of the State, and comprises the whole of the Maryland ocean front. It is bounded on the north by Wicomico County and the State of Delaware, east by the ocean, and south by the ocean and Virginia, and west by Pocomoke River. The surface of the county is low and level, in some places rising only 5 feet above the sea. The Atlantic coast is bordered by sand bars separated from the mainland by lagoons known as Assawoman and Sinepuxent bays, having marshy shores. The area is 487 square miles, of which more than a third, or 132,549 acres, was under cultivation in 1900. The population for the same year was 20,865. The county seat is Snow Hill, with a population of 1,576 in 1900. Other towns are Pocomoke and Berlin, with populations in 1900 of 2,248 and 1,246, respectively.
