Garrett County MD

Garrett County MD, bounded on the north by Pennsylvania, on the east by Washington County, on the south by the North Branch of Potomac River, and on the west by West Virginia. The county is comprised mainly in the Allegany Plateau, having an undulating surface with an average altitude not far from 2,500 feet, and rising to a mountain range above the North Branch of Potomac River, known as Backbone Mountain, which has an extreme height of 3,400 feet and an average altitude of 3,000 feet. The northwest part is drained by Youghiogheny River to the Ohio and the southeast part by North Branch of the Potomac. The area is 240 square miles, of which less than 30 per cent, or 123,932 acres, was under cultivation in 1900. The population for the same year was 17,701. The county seat is Oakland, with a population of 2,170 in 1900.
