Abilene Texas

Abilene Texas, established on March 15, 1881, is a city located in the central part of the state, primarily in Taylor County, with a portion extending into Jones County. It serves as the county seat of Taylor County. The city was named after Abilene, Kansas, the original endpoint of the Chisholm Trail, by cattle shipping entrepreneur Joseph McCoy’s brother, who envisioned it as a major stock shipping point on the Texas and Pacific Railway. Abilene’s early growth was driven by the railroads, ranching, and its strategic location as a commercial and transportation hub. Its establishment marked a significant phase in the westward expansion and development of Texas, attracting settlers and businesses alike.
