Biography of Egbert Garth

EGBERT GARTH. In 1812 Elijah Garth came from Albemarle County, Va., to Kentucky, and made settlement near Trenton, in Todd County, on a farm now occupied by Webster C. Garth, and which he had but fairly begun to develop, when (in 1815) he died. He was twice married, first to Miss Fretwell, and second to Miss Elizabeth Wait, and as the result of each union, had four children. None of these are now living, but among their immediate descendants are some of the most worthy families of Todd County. Paschal L. was a son of Elijah Garth, and was born in Albemarle County, Va., and removed with his father’s family to Kentucky. He was here reared to maturity; returned to Virginia and married Miss Lucy E. B. Garth, who was born in 1813, in Albemarle County of that State. They settled on a farm long known, as the ” Dunheath ” farm, where Paschal spent the remainder of his days, which terminated in 1865, and where his aged widow is now residing. Their union was blessed with twelve children, five of whom are deceased; four of the surviving ones being residents of Todd County. Paschal Garth had served as a county officer in Todd County, and was a member of the Christian Church. Egbert Garth, whose name heads this sketch, is the third child of Paschal and Lucy E. B. Garth, and was born in the county May 18, 1835. He grew to manhood on his father’s farm, or until sixteen years old, when he began his career in mercantile life, first as a salesman in a dry goods house. He was thus employed until he opened a business for himself in 1862. From the year 1865 to 1870 he was retired from business, but in the latter year again embarked in business which he still continues. He owns a good double brick store-room on the south side of the public square, where he has a complete stock of goods of a general character. Mr. Garth is a good business man; has served as Police Judge, and is an esteemed citizen. He was married near Elkton,. in December, 1880, to Miss Laura Sumpter, daughter of William C. and Mary Sumpter. She was born -in Todd County January 23, 1857. Mrs. Garth is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Mr. Garth has one child, named Paschal Lee Garth, born May 21, 1884.
