The father was born on this farm in July, 1822. The grandfather, Jesse Smith, of Virginia, traded property in the city of Richmond for a farm near Russellville; that farm he soon after sold and bought this farm, then consisting of 300 acres, which has since been increased to about 700 acres. The father of our subject now lives on his farm near Nashville, Tenn. The mother was born in Robertson County, Tenn. She died August 9, 1882, aged forty-five. Mr. Smith was married April 28, 1880, to Miss Willie, daughter of Winston Henry, of Christian County. Mr. Smith and his brother Eugene attended Warren College at Bowling Green four years, after which they attended the Vanderbilt College at Nashville two years. Eugene graduated from the Literary Department in 1880, and from the Law Department in the class of 1881, since which time he has been practicing law in Nashville.
