Biograhical Sketch of William Pinckney Stephenson

WILLIAM PINCKNEY STEPHENSON was born in what is now Alexander County, N. C., and is a son of William L. Stephenson and Lavinia Smith, both of whom were natives of North Carolina, the former of English and the latter of Welsh ancestry. William P. was born July 20, 1823, and in 1839 came to Kentucky with the family, who settled in Logan County, where, in February, 1840, his mother died. His father afterward removed near Hopkinsville, Christian Co., where he lived for many years, and where he died, January 28, 1882, at the age of eighty-four years. William P. is the third child of a family of ten born to these parents, of whom seven are still living. He was reared to the pursuits of the farm; married on October 3, 1852, to Miss Sarah Camp-bell, daughter of William and Mary (McLain) Campbell. She was born March 30, 1820, in Logan County, Ky. They have been blessed with five children, viz.: Mary S., Susan L. (deceased), William T., Victoria A. and Helen, wife of George T. Dickerson. Mr. Stephenson located on the farm where he now lives in 1852, it being the first tract of land ever entered in the county, which entry was made by William McDowell. But one opinion is entertained of this family, who enjoy the esteem and confidence of an extensive circle of acquaintances. They are members of the Christian Church, and we deem it but justice to say that the word of Mr. Stephenson is regarded by all who know him as equivalent to his bond, and that he has, in fact, proven himself an example of ” God’s noblest work.”
