Stuart, Charles Irvin – Obituary

Charles Irvin Stuart was born April 5, 1891 on a farm southwest of Glen Elder, Kansas, and at the age of 86 years, died July 29, 1977 at the Mitchell County Hospital, Beloit, Kansas. He was one of eight children born to Ivey and Phoebe Wooten Stuart.

As a boy, Irvin attended the Grelett Rural School and an agriculture course at Kansas State College. During the late 1920s and early 1930s, he was a member of the Grelett School Board. He served as a trustee on the Glen Elder Township Board for 10 years. In 1933 he was one of the first board members of the Mitchell County Farm Bureau and was secretary of that board for several years.

Mr. Stuart was a birthright member of the Friends Church, Glen Elder, and faithfully attended as health permitted, serving a number of years as a trustee and in other ways.

His marriage to Ruth Hendricks took place at Beloit, Kansas on March 30, 1917. They became the parents of four children, two sons, Gail and Stanley and two daughters, Shirley and Reta. For 47 years the Stuarts made their home on a farm southwest of Glen Elder, and retired to live in Beloit in 1964 when the farm was covered by Lake Waconda. They were blessed by observing their 60th wedding anniversary together shortly before his death.

Preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and four sisters, he leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Ruth of the home at 1409 N. Bell, Beloit, his sons and their wives, Gail and Beth Stuart, Glen Elder and Stanley and Grace Margaret Stuart, Dallas, Texas; his daughters, Shirley and her husband, Juan Jiminez, Westminster, Maryland, and Reta Stuart, Beloit, a missionary recently returned from Burundi, Africa; one sister, Mrs. Ruth Weidenhaft, Portland, Oregon. There are eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Rev. Robert Winters conducted funeral services at the Friends Church in Glen Elder on Tuesday morning, August 2, 1977. The music was furnished by soloist, Mr. LaVern Harrison and organist, Mrs. Cecil Boehner.

Casket bearers were Elmer E. Davis, Everett Hoffman, Ralph Hendricks, Doyle Runft, Dr. James Stuart, and Dr. Larry Stuart, Mr. and Mrs. Rex Thomson took care of the floral arrangements.

Interment was made in the Glenwood Cemetery, Glen Elder, with the McDonald Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
