Anderson, H.W. – Obituary

Enterprise, Wallowa County, Oregon

Graveside services are being held this morning (Thursday) at 10 o’clock in the Enterprise cemetery by the Booth-Bollman Funeral Home for Henry Walderman Anderson whose body was found Sunday morning in his cabin on the mountainside on Scotch Creek above Alder Slope south of Enterprise. The Rev. John Sinclair will officiate.

Mr. Anderson owned a tract of land on Scotch Creek and had been cutting timber. He frequently walked to Enterprise for food supplies. About three weeks ago, after being notified by neighbors that Anderson had not been seen for several days, Sheriff Dick O’Brien and Ted Grote went to his cabin and found that he needed food. After they returned, Ray Dunsmore flew over the cabin to drop food which Mr. Anderson failed to find. O’Brien and Grote then returned to the cabin with the food Dunsmore had dropped.

Last week neighbors again reported that no sign of Anderson had been seen for several days and that the cabin roof remained covered with snow. Sunday morning Sheriff O’Brien and Cliff Keyser visited the cabin on snowshoes. They found the door locked and they were able to force entrance they found the lifeless body of Anderson lying on the bed. It is estimated that he had died possibly ten days before. Part of the food that had been dropped by Ray Dunsmore had been used.

O’Brien and Keyser returned to Enterprise and, with Dan Deboie and Kirk Hayes, all members of the Wallowa County rescue team, again went to the Anderson cabin, taking a toboggan to bring the out to the road where it could be picked up by ambulance and brought to the Booth-Bollman Funeral Home.

Mr. Anderson was born May 10, 1885 at Marion, Kans., son of John and Helena Anderson. He had lived in Wallowa County for about fifty years, farming, herding sheep, and more recently cutting timber.

He is survived by a sister, Mrs. D.H. (Daisy) Powell of San Luis Obispo, Calif., and a brother, Ben Anderson, Marion, Kans.

Mrs. Powell and her husband and son arrived Tuesday evening from California.
