S.H. Biggs, Pioneer Of County, Is Dead

Lived Near Lostine For About 80 Years and Family Was Prominent.

S.H. Biggs, a resident of Wallowa County for nearly 30 years, died last Sunday at Evens. The funeral was held in the Evans Church at 11 o’clock Tuesday morning, Dec. 22 and was attended by a large gathering of friends of the family. Rev. Evert Smits conducted the services.

Mr. Biggs was born Sept. 1, 1838, in Lindentown, Ohio. The family moved to Iowa where he was married, May 30, 1866 to Miss Harriet B. Newcomb. They came west more than 30 years ago, going first to Walla Walla. After staying there a short time they moved to the Wallowa valley where their home always remained in the middle valley, near Lostine.

The family has been conspicuous in the county since locating here. Mrs. Biggs and five children survive. The children are George M. Biggs of Evans, Mrs. Minnie Seibert of Ashland, who came home more than a week ago, Mrs. George Wood, Mrs. M.O. Courtney and Elmer Biggs all living near Evans and Lostine.

During the Civil War, Mr. Biggs enlisted in the Union Army and served three years. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity for 50 years.
