Smith, Eli – Obituary

Mrs. Weldon Silver of Troy received word Friday night that her father, Eli Smith, died at his home Thursday evening. Mr. Smith was an early pioneer of the Grouse country, coming in on Grouse flat and taking a homestead many years ago. His first wife died on the homestead many years ago. He was married again and stayed on the place for several years.

Two years ago this fall as Mr. and Mrs. Smith were coming to Troy their team became frightened and ran away down the grade, throwing both of them out of the buggy. Mrs. Smith was so badly hurt that she was taken to Lewiston at once but only lived a few days and was buried at Lewiston.

Mr. Smith gave up farming and sold off all of his stock and went to live with his daughter Jewell for awhile in Portland. But it seems he had a home in Idaho at the time of his death. He was about 72 years old.

There was never a better neighbor than Mr. Smith and he was a good husband and father. He leaves to mourn his death three daughters, two sons and several grandchildren, besides many warm friends. Mr. Smith’s oldest son, Oscar, was drowned many years ago in Southwestern Idaho. Mr. Smith was well known throughout the whole North country, and his children have the deepest sympathy of the whole community in this hour of sorrow.
