Hays, Clarence Edward – Obituary

Clarence Edward Hays, 84, of Elgin died Sept. 22 at St. Alphonsus Hospital in Boise. Viewing will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St. A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Elgin Cemetery. A dinner will follow at the Elgin Community Center.
Mr. Hays was born Oct. 7, 1921, to Luther and Ellen Bennett Hays in Baker City. The family lived in Missouri, Washington, Idaho and Oregon.
He served in the Navy during World War II, and on Sept. 2, 1951, he married Beverly Case in Elgin. He worked at the Boise Cascade mill in Elgin until retiring in 1984.
He was a member of the Carpenters and Joiners Union, the VFW, the Elgin Masonic Lodge, the Knights of Pythias and the Rockwall Grange. He was also an Elgin volunteer firefighter. He enjoyed gardening, camping, woodworking and attending his grandchildren’s athletic events.
Survivors include his wife of Elgin; children and their Spouses, Jerry Hays, Dee Dee and Duke McClune, Gail and Eddie Toney, Denise and Don Ludwig and Jennifer and Rick Smith, all of Elgin; a sister, Bert Stephens of Kooskie, Idaho; brothers, Ben Hays and Charles Hays, both of Elgin; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and other relatives. A brother, Oliver Hays, and a sister, Bea Shaffer, died earlier.
Memorials may be made to the Elgin High School Athletic Fund in care of Daniels Chapel.
