Erwin H. Carpenter

Erwin H. Carpenter, 80, of Lewiston, Idaho, and formerly of Grangeville, Idaho, and Union County, died Feb. 20 at the Idaho State Veterans Home in Lewiston. Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh Street,

La Grande. A graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at the Grandview Cemetery.

Erwin was born Jan. 13, 1927, to Earl and Ida Carpenter in La Grande. As a child he lived on the family farm near Elgin. He and his sister, Doris, rode their horse three miles to attend school in Elgin.

In 1945 he graduated from La Grande High School, then worked for the Union Pacific Railroad until entering the Air Force in February 1946. After the service he worked as a machinist and later as shop foreman for the State Highway Department.

After retiring in 1989, he and his wife moved to Grangeville, Idaho. His interests included hunting, fishing and gardening. His great joy was his family, and he loved animals.

Survivors include his wife, Grace Carpenter of Lewiston; sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Dallas McCrae of Wallowa; children and their spouses, Bill and Carla of Grangeville and Cindi and Lou of Puyallup, Wash.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.

Memorials may be made to the Idaho State Veterans Home, 821 21st Ave., Lewiston, Idaho 83501.
