Alfred Wilson Taylor and Elizabeth Duffield
Descendants.
1) William Carter Taylor, b. 12th December Friday Night 15 minutes past Nine o’clock, 1823; died Saturday December 2nd 1905 at 5:30 p.m.; never married, (and is still living on the old Taylor Homestead, Buffalo Creek, Carter County, Tennessee).
2) Nathaniel Macon Taylor, b. Friday morning 23rd day of September 1825; m. Miss Mollie K. Jones of Richmond, Virginia, _________ and by her had several children (a) Hgh D. Taylor, b. 1870, d 1890; (b) Mary, who married Jack Winston and by him has three, Nathaniel Taylor Winston and Alfred Wilson Taylor. And another by the name of Jack Hasting Winston Jr. They live in Bristol, Tennessee, and Mr. Winston is a practicing lawyer (c) Jaunita Taylor, who married Bunting English. They live in Bristol also. (d) Elizabeth Taylor, who married Thomas Davis. They live in Bristol also. Nathaniel Macon Taylor died on Sunday 17th day of April 1898 at his home in Bristol, Tennessee. He leaves a widow, three daughters and three grandchildren. He was a very prominent lawyer.
3) George Duffield Taylor, B. Saturday Night the 23rd day of January 1829 15 minutes before three o’clock. “This man after the death of my Father became my guardian, and the guardian, and the guardian for all of the Father’s children and acted as such till, the youngest (myself) became of age. It was the dying request of my Father that he acts as such. He is now living with his brother, William, and old bachelor himself, on the farm, and is a very prosperous man, and a most excellent business man. These two old bachelors are benefactors to all the country surrounding them at all times giving to the poor and needy, protecting their friends when necessary.
4) Sarah Martha Taylor, B. September 27th, 1830; __________; d December 19th, 1832 at about 2 o’clock.
5) James Patton Taylor, b. 7th day of April 1832 at about 3 o’clock; d. July 6th, 1853 on Wednesday at about 9 o’clock P.M. of heart trouble. He had studied medicine in Philadelphia, Penn., and was about to begin practice with very bright prospects. Had contemplated moving to Hunstville, Alabama.
6) Alfred Wilson Taylor, b. on the morning of the 20th day of December 1835, between twelve and one o’clock; d. was killed at Jonesboro, Tenn., on Saturday the 25th of February 1862 at about 6 o’clock P.M. while endeavoring to separate, or prevent a street duel, between two of his friends, one of whom turned upon him and shot him. He never married.
7) Mary Elizabeth Taylor, b. on the 5th day of October 1837 at about 7 o’clock P.M.’ m. Dr. Jesse Pepper of Bristol, Tennessee, and by him had two children; George Henry Pepper, not married, who lives in Knoxville, Tennessee, and is engaged in the manufacture of drugs and patent medicines; and Rowena Pepper, who died at the age of 15 years. Mrs. Pepper died in Bristol and survived her husband only a very few years, probably, six or seven-not over.
8) Henry Harrison Taylor, b. June 5th, 1840; d. at his home in Knoxville, Tennessee, on Monday the 13th day of April 1903. He married Miss Inez Johnston of Madisonville, Tennessee and by her had three children; (a) Alfred Taylor; (b) Carry May Taylor; and (c) Elizabeth Taylor, who died very young with diphtheria. * I will hereafter append Newspaper Notices of this death and Funeral, and of his life-F.D. Note: This branch of the Taylor family is equally as well known as that of James Patton Taylor’s, but they never took any particular part in politics. Prior to the War all of the children of the Taylor family were Whigs, and when the War came, the family pf Alfred Wilson Taylor sided with the South and that of James Patton Taylor with the North. Henry Harrison Taylor, Nathaniel Macon Taylor and George Duffield Taylor were in the Southern Army, and the two former were taken prisoners and confined in prison for several months; Henry Harrison Taylor being imprisoned in Johnson’s Island for more the 27 months. They ranked as Officers, towit: George, as Major under General Bragg, Henry as Captain under _________________, and Nathaniel as Colonel under __________________. Their public, military and private lives are beyond criticism. After the War (1861 to 1865) they became democrats, and the family of James Patton Taylor became Republicans, except Robert, and James Taylor, who were democrats. General Nathaniel Taylor departed this life on the 20th, day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixteen before seven o’clock A.M. in the 45th year of his age.
Mary (Patton) Taylor, widow of General Nathaniel Taylor, departed this life on 2nd day of August 1853.
