City of Portland Birth Index 1881 - 1901 This database provides index information to the original City of Portland birth records held by the Oregon State Archives. Prior to the passage of legislation that required the recording of births at the state level, the City of Portland passed a local ordinance that required the recording of births within the city. Although there are a few records that record births that occurred earlier, the bulk of the records begin in March 1881. The record may include the following information:
In some instances an actual birth record does not exist, but there is an entry in the register created by the city as the records were filed. If there is a volume number indicated in the remarks field the only information found comes from the register. Because the requirement to file birth records was by local ordinance, births occurring in areas outside the city's boundaries will not be found here. Linnton, St. John's, Albina and many of the areas now part of Portland were annexed into the city in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. Some people did come from outlying areas to Portland because of access to more advanced health care, so there are instances of births occurring in Portland when in fact the family resided outside of the city. How to Search This Database Not all the information found on the birth record is included in this database. The database can be searched using date of birth, the name of the child, the surname, and the parents' names. Parents' name includes mother's maiden name when that information was provided. As mentioned above in many instances the child was not named at the time the birth was being recorded, so a search by surname only is likely to be the most fruitful. When using the name field to search, this index looks for any and all occurrences of the string you entered in the name field. For example, searching for STEVE would return both STEVENS, SARAH and BELLIS, STEVE. Additionally, if you enter criteria for more than one field it is used as an AND. Hence, if you enter J as the Child Name and A as the Surname you will find all people whose name contains the letter J AND whose surname contains the letter A. The date fields behave as follows. If you enter just the From date, then the search will return all people born on that date. If you provide just the To date then the search will return all people born before that date. If you enter both the From date and the To Date the search will return all people born between those dates. If you are searching by State in the Parent Nativity field, please adhere to the standard US Postal Abbreviations (e.g. OR for Oregon, TX for Texas, CA for California, etc.) The sort button allows sorting by either Date or Name. The default is to sort by Date |
