We chose this data due to the broad reach in researchers and the depth of information Footnote has on the subject matter.

The majority of the Civil War data we requested dealt with Compiled Service Records for Union and Confederate soldiers. Chances are, if you've been able to prove your ancestry back to the 1860's in the US then you likely had somebody serve in the Civil War. Over 2.8 million men served in the Civil War!
