In memory of Master Ebenezer & Capt. James Scudder, sons of Capt. James D. & Mrs. Hannah Scudder. These two promising young men were on board the sloop Caroline when she struck on Collier's Ledge Feb. 10 1829, with other survivors committed themselves to their boat and landed on Sampson's Island the ensuing day where Master
Ebenezer after suffering a few hours perished with the cold, Feb. 21, 1829 aged 13 years 8 months & 14 days. Capt. James survived until they reached the schooner Gold Hunter then lying near the island where he died a few minutes after, being worn out by exertion, Feb. 21, 1829 aged 19 years 8 months & 8 days.
