E. T. Jarman Was Early Day Butcher

Graveside services for Emery T. Jarman, 85, Haines, were conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday August 16, at North Powder Cemetery.

The Rev. Robert McNiel, officiated and interment was under the direction of The Beatty Chapel. Friends contributed to the Baker County Tuberculosis Assn. in lieu of sending flowers.

Mr. Jarman passed away Sunday August 13 at St. Elizabeth hospital after a long illness.

Mr. Jarman was born November 11, 1881, at Marvin, Kansas, the son of Jake and Mary Ellen Ward Jarman and left there with his parents in May, 1882, in a covered wagon train, arriving in Oregon in August 1882, two years before the railroad. His parents owned and operated the Haines Hotel when it was a thriving business. Mr. Jarman was married to Mary Green in November, 1903, in the old Tom Gorman Home on Elm Street in Baker, and the couple lived in Haines.

Earlier he had owned and operated the meat market in old Rock Creek town, and delivered meat to the housewives throughout the Muddy Creek and Wingville areas every day with the meat packed in ice. He later lived for two years in California, and for a short time in North Powder, where he worked as a butcher.

Mrs. Jarman preceded him in death on May 21, 1950, ands for the past 13 years he had made his home with his daughter, Georgia Scott, Haines.

He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Georgia Scott, a teacher in the Baker school; Helen Spohn, Portland, and Beryl Kulhank of Mt. View, California; sister, Mrs. Bertha Olson of McMinnville; by four grandsons, David Scott, Paul Scott, Terry Kulhank, and Larry Spohn; granddaughter, Nanci Kulhank and great grandsons, Mike Scott, Jim Scott, and J… Scott.
