Sir WILLIAM-JERVIS TWYSDEN, Bart., born 13 May 1760, succeeded his father, sir William, in 1767; married, 7 May Frances, da. of Alexander Wynch, esq., some time governor of Madras, by whom he has issue, 1. WILLIAM, b. 1 Dec. 1788  2. Francis-James, b. 14 June 1803 ; 3. John , b. 25 Nov. 1808  4. Frances, b. 29 March 1787 ; 5. Flora, b. 22 June 1790 ; 6. Mary, b. 20 May 1792, m. July 1819, her cousin, Henry Duncan Twysden, R.N.  7. Eliza, b. 24 May 1794, m. 23 July 1827, Charles-Henry Seale, esq., capt. R.N.  8. Isabella- Camilla, b. 6 June 1797, m. 25 March 1824, the rev. Robert-Org'il Lemon.

     Twysden Borough, or Twysenden, now usually called Burrs Farm, in the hundred of West Barnefield, in Kent, was the ancient inheritance of this family, from which they took their name. Adam de Twysden possessed this estate in the reign of Edward I.
     I. Sir WILLIAM TWYSDEN the 11th in descent from him, was knighted by king James I, at the Charter House, 11 May 1603, being one of those who conducted him to London when he came to take possession of the English crown, and he afterwards advanced him to the dignity of bart. ; m. Anne, da. of sir Moyle Finch, hart., and sister of Thomas, 1st earl of Winchilsea, and by her (who d. 14 Nov. 1638) had issue,
        1. Sir ROGER, 2d hart.
        2. Sir Thomas, of Bradburne created a baronet 1666 (see that title).
        3. William, d. man. 311 July 1641.
        4. John, who was a fellow of the College of Physicians of London, and M.D. ; he d. unm. 13 Sept. 1688
        5. Francis, d. unm.
        6. Elizabeth, an. sir Hugh Cholmley, bart.
        7. Anne, m. sir Christopher Yelverton, bart., ancestor to the earls of Sussex, extinct.

     Sir William d. 8 Jan. 1628, and was succeeded by his eldest son,
     II. Sir ROGER, m. Isabella, youngest da. and co-h. of sir Nicholas Saunders, knt., and by her (who d. in 1655, aged 52) he had issue,
         1. WILLIAM.
         2. Roger, who d. unm. 20 Feb. 1676, aged 35.
         3. Charles, M.D., who d. unm. 1690.
         4. Anne, m. John Porter, esq.
         5. Isabella, d. unm. in 1726.
         6. Frances, m. six Peter Killigrew, knt. and hart., and d. in 1711.
    
Sir Roger d. 7 June 1672, and was succeeded by his eldest son,
     III. Sir WILLIAM, b. 1635: he served in several parliaments, and in the first year of king James II was elected one of the knts. of the shire for Kent; m. Frances, da. and h. of Josiah Crisp, esq., and by her, who survived him, had issue,
           1. Roger, d. un.. in his father's lifetime.
           2. Sir THOMAS, 4th bart.
           3. Sir WILLIAM, 5th bart.
           4. Charles, d. 1698, aged 20.
           5. Heneage, killed at the battle of Malplaquet 1709.
           6. John, lieut. R.N., drowned with sir Cloudesley Shovel 1707.
           7. Josias, killed in Flanders 1708.
           8. Anne, d. cram.
           9. Frances,
          10. Isabella, m. Richard Lybbe, esq.

     Sir William d. 27 Nov. 1697, and was succeeded by his eldest surviving son,
     IV. Sir THOMAS, m. in 1710, Catharine, da. and sole h. of sir Francis Withers, knt., one of the judges of the King's Bench, by whom (who re-m. brigadier-gen. Jocelyn, youngest son of sir Robert Jocelyn, hart., ancestor of the earls of Roden, in Ireland, and d. April 1730) he had only 2 das.,
           1. Frances, m. George Ogle, esq.
           2. Catharine, m. George Cooke, esq., one of the prothonotaries of the court of Common Pleas, son and h. of sir George Cooke, knt.

     Sir Thomas d. without male issue 10 Oct. 1712, and was succeeded by his brother,
     V. Sir WILLIAM, m. Jane, da. of Francis Twisden, esq., youngest son of sir Thomas Twisden, of Bradburn, co. Kent, hart., before mentioned, by whom he had issue,
             1. Sir WILLIAM, his successor.
             2. Thomas, lieut.-col. Ist life-guards, d. 19 July 1784, aged 74
             3. Philip, bishop of Raphoe 1746, m. 1st, 1741, Mary Purcell, by whom (who, d. 1713) he had a da., Jenny, b. 9 Jan. 1742, d. young; and 2dly, Frances, da. of - Carter, and d. 2 Nov. 1752, leaving by her a posthumous da., Frances, m. George, 4th earl of Jersey, and d. 25 July 1821.
           4. Eliza, d. unm. March 1798, aged 84.

     Sir William d. 20 Aug. 1751, and was succeeded by his eldest son,
     VI. Sir WILLIAM, m. Mary, da. of George Jervis, esq., by whom (who d. 4 June 1818) he had,
           1. WILLIAM-JERVIS, his successor
           2. Heneage, b. 23 Sept. 1764, m. 17 July 1802, Anne, da. of sir John-Dixon Dyke, bart., and d. without issue March 1826.
           3. Thomas, rapt. R.N., b. 211 Oct. 1765 an. Isabella, da. of Henry Duncan,esq., commissioner of the navy, and d. 4 Oct. 1801, leaving issue 2 sons, Henry Duncan who m.1819, his cousin, Mary, da. of six William I. Twisden; and Thomas, in holy orders, who m. Oct. 1827, Elizabeth, eldest da. of E. N. W. Fortescue, of Fallowpit, co. Devon, esq., deceased.
          4. Frances, b. 6 Dec. 1762, m. 1st, 9 Aug. 1783, Archibald, 11th earl of Eglinton ; and 2dly, Francis Moore, esq., brother of gen. sir John Moore, K.B., and is deceased.
     Sir William d. 1767, and was succeeded by his eldest son,
     VII. Sir WILLIAM-JERVIS, the present bart.


     Arms--Per saltine, argent and gales, a saltier between 4 cross crosslets, all counterchanged.
     Crest--On a wreath, a cockatrice sejant, azure winged, &c. or.
     Seat--At Roydon Hall, East Peckham, co. Kent.
