TEMPLE, of  STOWE, Co. Buckingham.

     Sir GRENVILLE TEMPLE, Bart., born 16, Oct. 1768 succeeded his father, sir John, Nov. 1798 ; married, 1st, 20 March 1797, Elizabeth, da. of George Watson, of the state of Masschussetts, esq., and by her (who d. at Rome, 4 Nov. 1809) had issue, 1. Augusta-Grenville, b. 1 Jan. 1798 d. June following; 2. Grenville, major in the army, b. 20 July 1799; 3. John, capt. in the 1st royal regt. of foot, b. 14 June 1801; 4. Elizabeth-Augusta;  5. Matilda-Margaret, b. 3 May 1803, d. unm. 4 Jan. 1824: sir Grenville m. 2dly, 9 June 1812 Maria-Augusta-Dorethea, 2d da. of the late sir Thomas Rumbold, bart., and relict of lieut.-col. Frederick Manners.

 

     This family of Temple is said to be descended from Leofric, earl of Chester, who d. 1057, leaving issue Algar, earl of Mercia and the East Angles, and a son, Henry, who, in the reign of Henry I., obtained from Robert, earl of Leicester, a grant of the manor of Temple, co. Leicester, from whence his descendants assumed their name.

     PETER TEMPLE, said to be 12th in descent from the above named Henry, settled at Stowe, co. Bucks, and d. 1577, leaving two sons,

   1. John, father of the 1st baronet.

   2. Anthony, ancestor of the viscounts Palmerston.

     I. Sir THOMAS TEMPLE, 1st bart., was knighted by king James I., 1603, and in 1612 created a bart.; m. Esther, da. of Miles Sandys, esq., by whom he had, besides other issue,

   1. Sir PETER, 2d bart.

   2. Sir John, knt, m. Dorothy, da. and co-h. of Edmund Lee, of Stanton Bury, esq, and d. 1632, leaving issue----1. Sir Peter, grandfather of sir William, 5th bart---2. sir Thomas, knt., governor of Nava Scotia, d. 1674-5, s. p.---3. Edmund, of  Selby, co. Northampton, from whom there was male issue remaining in 1683, but f whose descendants nothing 's known beyond that time---4.  Sir Purbeck, knt, gent. of the privy chamber to Charles II.

     Sir Thomas d. about 1636, and was succeeded by his eldest son,

     II. Sir PETER, 2d bart., M.P. for the town of Buckingham in the two last parliaments of Charles I.; m. 1st,  Anne da. and co-h. of sir Arthur Throgmorton, knt.;  and 2dly, Christian, sister and co-h. of sir Richard Leveson, K.B.

     Sir Peter d. 1653, and was succeeded by his only son.

     III. Sir RICHARD, b. 1634. He was appointed lord-lieutenant of the co. Bunks, in 1600 ; m. Mary, da. of --- Knap,, esq., and heiress to her brother, and by her had, besides other children who d. young,

   1. .Sir RICHARD, 4th bart

   2. Hester, m. Richard Grenville, great-grandfather to the duke of Buckingham and Chandos.

   3. Christian, m. sir Thomas Lyttelton, bart.

   4.  Maria, m. 1st, dr. West, prebendary of  Winchester; and 2dly, sir John Langham, bart.

   5. Penelope, m. Moses Berenger, esq.

     Sir Richard d. 15 May 1697, and Ives succeeded by his son,

     IV. Sir RICHARD, who was chosen on his father's death M.P. for the town of Buckingham, and 4th queen Anne, was one of he knts. of the shire. He gained great honor by his bravery and conduct in the wars in Flanders, where he was made a lieutenant-general and by king George I. was created baron and viscount Cobham. He was also one of his majesty's privy council, ambassador extraordinary to the emperor, and colonel of his own royal regiment; m. Anne, da. of Edmund Halsey, esq. (who d. 4 Oct. 1705). Sir. Richard d. in 1749, without issue, when the peerage in him became extinct, but the title of bart. devolved upon his kinsman,

     V. Sir WILLIAM, eldest son of William Temple, of Lillingstone Dayrell, co. Bucks, esq., who was only surviving son and heir of sir Peter Temple, eldest son of sir John Temple, younger son of the 1st bart., as above mentioned.  Sir William m. 1st, Elizabeth, da. and sole h. of Peter Paxton, M.D., by whom (who d. 1729) he had issue,

   1. Paxton, only son, d. unm. 1745.

   2. Henrietta, m. William Dicken, esq., whose son and heir, John Dicken, esq., took the surname and arms of Temple in 1796.

     Sir William m. 2dly, Elizabeth, da. of Hugh Ethersey, and by her (who. d. 1762) had issue,

   3. Anne-Sophia, m, her cousin, sir Richard, 7th bart.

     Sir William d. 10 April 1760, and was succeeded by his only brother,

     VI. Sir PETER, who d. Feb. 1761, and was succeeded by his son,

     VII. Sir RICHARD m. Anna-Sophia, da. of sir William Tempest, bart.  In 1761 he was appointed one of the commissioners of the navy, and in 1764 one of the commissioners of the revenue at New York. He d. 15 Nov. 1786, without issue, when the title was assumed by

     VIII. Sir JOHN, but in virtue of what descent he claimed it the Editor has never been able to ascertain. The statement in the former editions of this work, that he was great-grandson of the 2d bart. must be incorrect, inasmuch as the 5th, 6th, and 7th baronets were more remotely descended, being from a younger son of the first baronet. The Editor addressed a letter to Sir Grenville, but it was returned for want of a correct address which he has not been able to procure:---b. 1730, m. Elizabeth da. of James Bowdoin, esq., late governor of the state of Massachusetts, by whom (who d. 24 Oct. 1809) he had issue,

   1. Grenville, his successor.

   2 Jarmes, who, pursuant to the desire of his maternal uncle, assumed the name of Bowdoin, m.  Mary, da. of Thomas Dickason, of Fullwell Lodge, co. Middlesex, esq., and by her (who d. at Pisa, 2 Feb. 1821) he has issue one son, James. and 3 das.

   3. Elizabeth, m. Thomas L. Winthorp, of the state of Masachusetts, esq.

   4. Augusta,  m. William L. Palmer, esq., capt. 18th light dragoons.

     Sir John was, in 1785, appointed consul-general to the United States of America, in which employment he d. Nov. 1798, and was succeeded by his son,

     IX. Sir GRENVILLE, present bart.

 

     Arms--1st and 4th, or, an eagle displayed, sable:  2d and 3d, argent on two bars, sable, 6 marlets, or.

     Crest--On a ducal coronet, a martlet, or.

       Motto--Templa quam dilecta!
