MORDAUNT, of MASSINGHAM, CO. Norfolk.

    Sir JOHN MORDAUNT, Bart., succeeded his father, sir Charles, 30 May 1823, born 24 Aug. 1808.

      Osbert le Mordaunt, a Norman knt., was possessed of Radwell, co. Bedford, by the gift of his brother, which he had of William the Conqueror, for his services, and the services of his father, in the conquest of this kingdom.
     WILLIAM MORDAUNT, of Turvey, co. Bedford, temp. Edward IV., left 2 sons; the eldest, sir John, was father of 2 sons, John, 1st lord Mordaunt, of Turvey, from whom the earls of Peterborough and Monmouth, now extinct, were descended; and the 2d, WILLIAM, was great-grandfather of the 1st baronet.
     I. L'ESTRANGE MORDAINT, b. about the year 1572; he was bred up to arms, and signalized himself in the wars between the Spaniards and the States of Holland, and was created a baronet as above; m. Margaret, da. of -----Charles, of Antwerp, and had issue,                   
                    1. Sir ROBERT, 2d bart.
                    2. Henry, m. Barbara, da. of James Calthorp, esq., and was father to  L'ESTRANGE Mordaunt, esq., m. Barbara, sister of sir Nevil Catlin, knt., by whom he had issue, Henry and Barbara, wife of capt. John Brown.
    
     Sir L'Estrange d. 1627, and was succeeded by his eldest son,
     II. Sir ROBERT, was knighted during his father's life, and succeeded him in the title and estate; m. Amy, da. of sir Austin Southerton, knt., and had issue,
                    1. CHARLES, his successor.
                           2. Robert, who by Elizabeth, da. of Mr. Rouse, of Utrecht, in Holland. Had a da., Elizabeth, m. Robert, son of Clement Throkmorton, esq.; and a son,  John-Lewis Mordaunt, m. the da. of -------- Harington,      co. Lincoln, esq., relict of sir William Thorold, bart.
                          3. William, m. the da. and h. of ----------- Butler, esq., and left issue.
                          4. Amy, m.--------------Estcourt, esq.
                          5. Anne, m.-------------Yickering, esq.

     Sir Robert d. 23 Aug. 1638, and was succeeded by his eldest son,
       III. Sir CHARLES, during the civil wars testified his loyalty to king Charles I, and had his estate sequestrated; m. Catharine, da. of sir Lionel Tollemache, bart. (ancestor of the earls of Dysart) by whom (who re-m. Sir Charles Lee, knt.) he had issue,
                       1. CHARLES, 4th bart.
                       2. Tollemache, d. in his father's lifetime, s.p.
                       3. JOHN, 5th bart.
                        4. Henry, d. young.
                        5. Catherine; 6. Elizabeth; 7. Amy, all d. unm.

       Sir Charles d. 1648, and was succeeded by his eldest son,
          IV. Sir CHARLES, m. Elizabeth, da. and Co-h. of Nicholas Johnson, and niece to sir William Turner, knt., lord mayor of London; d. without issue; and his widow re-m. Francis Godolphin esq. He was succeeded by his brother,
       V. Sir JOHN, who was chosen one of the knts. of the shire for Warwick, in several parliaments, in the reigns of king William, and queen Anne ; m. 1st, Anne, da. of William Risley, esq., by whom (who d. 1692) he had an only da.,
                          1. Penelope, who d. young.
     Sir John m. 2dly, Penelope, da. of sir George Warburton, bart., and had issue by her,
                    2. Sir CHARLES, 6th bart.
                    3. John.
                    4. Penelope, m. Joseph Herne, esq.
                    5. Catharine, m. dr. Dobson, warden of Winchester College.

     Sir John d. 6 Sept. 1721, and was succeeded by his eldest son,
     VI. Sir CHARLES, who was one of the knts. of the shire for Warwick for nearly half a century; m. 1 Dec. 1720, ---------da. of sir John Congers, bart., by whom (who d. March 1726) he had
issue,
                 1. Penelope, who d. unm.
                 2. Dorothy.

     Sir Charles m. 2dly, 1730, Sophia, only da. of sir John Wodehouse, bart., by whom (who d. in April 1788) he had issue,
                   3. Sophia; 4. Mary, who both d. unm.
                   4. JOHN, 7th bart.
                   5. Charles, rector of Massingham, in Norfolk, who, in 1794, m. Charlotte, da. of sir Philip Musgrave, of Kempton Park, bart., by whom he had one son, Charles, and a da., Charlotte: he d. 22 Jan. 1820.

      Sir Charles d. 7 March 1778, and was succeeded by his son,
     VII. Sir JOHN, who was many years one of the grooms of the bedchamber to his Majesty ; elected representative in parliament co. Warwick, on the death of sir Robert Lawley in March 1763, and again in 1796 ; m. Elizabeth, da. and co-h. of Thomas Prowse, of Axbridge, co. Somerset, esq., and by her (who d. 6 Oct. 1826) had issue,
                1. Sir CHARLES, 8th bart.
                  2. John, in holy orders, rector of Wycken, co. Buckingham, d. 27 Sept. 1806.
                  3. Elizabeth; 4. Sophia.
                  5.
 Mary m. in 1802, John Erskine, esq., brother to James, earl of Rosslyn. c survived her husband, and d. 17 July 1821.
                  6. Catharine, m. 26 Oct. 1811, the rev. Francis Mills, of Barford, co. Warwick
                  7. Charlotte, m. 15 April 1800, Richard Hippisley-Tuckfield, of Tuckfield and Fulford, co. Devon, esq.
                  8. Susan, m. Sept. 1814, William earl of St. Germans.

     Sir John d. 18 Nov. 1800, and was succeeded by his only son,
     VIII. Sir CHARLES, who m. 31 June 1807, the eldest da. of William Holbech, of Farmborough, co. Warwick, by whom he had issue,
            1. Sir JOHN present bart.
            2. A da., b. 24 Aug. 1811.
            3. Another da., b. 1 Jan. 1813.

     Sir Charles d. 30 May 1823, and was succeeded by his only son,
     IX. Sir JOHN, present bart.
     Arms-(See Plate 1.) Argent, a chevron, engrailed between three estoiles, sable.
     Crest-A Saracen's head in profile, proper, wreathed round the temples, argent and sable.
