HARINGTON, of RIDLINGTON, co. Rutland.

     Sir JOHN-EDWARD HARINGTON, Bart., born 1760, succeeded his father, sir James, in 1793 ; born 1764, married, 1787, Marianne, da. of Thomas Philpot, esq., by whom (who d. 20 Dec. 1824) he has issue, 1. James, b. 30 Sept. 1788, m. in India 1816, Sophia, daughter of ___ Steer, of Chichester, esq., and has issue, John, b. 22 May 1821; 2. Edward-John, b. 26 Oct. 1793; 3. Richard, b. 26 April 1800; 4. Robert, b. 22 Sept. 1801; 5. Maria, b. 13 April 1803, m. Charles Balfour, esq.

     It appears from the proceedings in a suit in the King's Bench, anno 5 Edw. I, that this family is descended from one OSULPHURS, who held the manor of Flemingley, co. Cumberland, temp. Rich. I. His Son, ROBERT, is designated de HARINGTON, from a manor in Durham, and his issue continued to-use it as their surname. In the reign of Edw. L, ROBERT de HARINGTON, great-grandson of the above Robert, acquired in marriage, with Agnes, da. and h. of Richard Cancefield, the manor of Aldingham, co. Lancaster, which was afterwards the principal seat of the family; he was father of
     JOHN de Harington; attended king Edw. I. in his expedition to Scotland 1305, and was made a knight of the Bath at the same time with the prince of Wales, afterwards king Edw. II. He was summoned to parliament from 18 Edw. II. to 21 Edw. III. 1347, when he d. He m. Juliana, da. of sir Richard Barlingham, knt., and had, besides other issue, a son and heir apprent, sir Robert, who d. in his lifetime, having m. Elizabeth, sister and co-h. of John de Moulton, lord of Egremont (a baron of parliament), and leaving issue by her, 1. JOHN, who succeeded his grandfather, and was 2d baron Harington; 2. Robert, ancestor of the present baron, of whom hereafter.
     JOHN 2d lord Harington, was summoned to parliament 1348, and d. 1363, leaving a son and h.,
     ROBERT, 3d lord, who d. 1405, leaving 2 sons, 1. ROBERT, and 2. JOHN, 4th and 5th lords, which last d. 1457, leaving an only da., Elizabeth, wife of William, lord Bonville.
     Sir ROBERT de Harington, younger brother of the 2d lord, and ancestor of the present bart., and of the lords Harington, of Exton, extinct, was seated at Fleete, co. Lincoln, m. Mary, da. of ____Kirkby, and left l son,
     JOHN, m. Agnes, da. of Laurence Flete, of Flete, co. Lincoin, and d. 1421, was succeeded by his son,
     ROBERT, m. the da. and co-h. of John de la Laund, and left a son,
     JOHN, m. Katharine, da, and h. of sir Thomas  Colepepper of Exton, co. Rutland, knt. and was succeeded by his son.
     ROBERT, high sheriff co. Rutland 1492 and 1998, and d. 12 Feb. 1501. He m. Maud, da. of sir John Prisett, knt., chief justice of the common pleas, and left a son,
     Sir JOHN Herringbone, of Exton, aforesaid, knt., aged 30 at his father's death; he was high sheriff co. Rutland 1503, 1512, 1516 and 1521; d. 5 Nov. 1524, buried at Exton; m. Alice, da. of Henry Southill, of _________, in Lincolnshire. He was succeeded by his eldest son,
     Sir JOHN Harington, of Exton, knt., high sheriff co. Rut. land 1520, 1533, 1540 and 1552, and treasurer of the army at Boulogne to king Henry VIII.; d. 1 May 1554; he m. Eliza. Beth, da. and h. of Robert Moton, of Peckleton, co. Leicester and was succeeded by his eldest son,
     Sir JAMES Harington, knt., high sheriff co. Rutland the latter part of 6th of Edward VI., and again the 3d, 8th, 20th and 28th of Elizabeth; m. Lucy, da. of sir William Sidney, of Penshurt, co. Kent, knt., and sister of sir Henry Sidney, K.G., and aunt of sir Philip Sidney, and d. 1592, having had issue by her (who d. 1590) 3 sons,
     1. John, created 21 Jul 1603, baron Harington, of Exton, co. Rutland. He was entrusted with the tuition of the princess Elizabeth, da. of King James L, till her marriage with Frederick, count palatine of the Rhine, and d. on his return from the electoral court at Worms, in Germany, 24 Aug. 1613, aged 73, leaving: 1. JOHN, 2d lord, who d. without issue in Feb. after his father; 2. Lucy, m. Edward, earl of Bedford; 3. Frances, m,. Sir Robert Chichester, knt.
     2. Sir Henry, m. Cecilia, da. and co-h. of Francis Agard, and had issue; 1. James, slain in Ireland; 2. sir William; 3. sir John, who m. Mary, da. of William Offley, and d. 1615, leaving a da. Sarah, who was 1st wife of John, lord Freschville, of Staveley, co. Derby.
     3. Sir JAMES, 1st baronet.
     1. Sir JAMES, of Ridlington, co. Rutland, and high sheriff of the co. 35th of Elizabeth. He was created a bart. 29 June 1611, upon the first institution of this order, and m. Frances, da. and co-h. of Robert Sapcote, of Elton, co. Bedford, esq., by whom he had 3 sons,
   1. Sir EDWARD, 2d hart.
   2. Sir Sapcote, knt., m., 1st, Jane, da. of sir William Samwell, of Upton, co. Northampton, knt. (one of the auditors of James L), by whom he had-1. James Harington, his eldest son, groom of the chambers to Charles L, and author of the Oceans, d. without issue 1677. Sir Sapcote's 2d wife was Jane, da. of six John Woodward, knt., by whom he had several children.
   3. John, m. Frances, da. of Terringham Norwood, of Astwood, co. Bucks.
     Sir James d. 2 Feb. 1613, and was succeeded by his eldest son,
     II. Sir EDWARD, received the honor of knighthood in his father's lifetime, was high sheriff co. Rutland, 19 James I. and 12 Charles I, and m. Margery, da, and co-h. of John Doyley, of Merton, co. Oxon, esq., with whom he had that seat and estate, and by whom he had issue several das. and 1 son,
     III. Sir JAMES, who m. Katharine, da. and co-h. of sir Edmund Weight, knt., lord mayor of London, by whom he had a numerous issue. and was succeeded by his eldest son,
   IV. Sir EDMUND, twice m., but d. without issue, and was succeeded by his great nephew,
   V. Sir EDWARD, who also d. without issue, and was succeeded by his great nephew,
   VI. Sir JAMES, m. Catharine, da. of William Boucher, of the Middle Temple, esq., and left 2 sons,
       1. Sir JAMES, 7th bart.
       2. Richard, in holy orders, d.; he m. 1st, Jane, da. and h. of Arthur Champernowne, of Darlington, co. Devon, esq., by whom he had 1 son, Arthur, M. P.for Saltash 1806, who has taken the name and arms of Champernowne, an inherits the Champernowne estate. Richard m. 2dly, Hannah, da. of-Hussey, of Truro, co. Cornwall, esq.; and 2dly, Elizabeth, da. of Abraham Chambers, esq., of Totteridge, co. Herts.
     Sir James was succeeded by his eldest surviving son,
     VIII. Sir JOHN-EDWARD, the present bart.
