CLIFTON, of CLIFTON, CO. Nottingham

22 May 1611.

 Sir ROBERT CLIFTON, bart., succeeded his father, sir Gervase, 26 Sept. 1815.

This family descends from ALVAREDUS DE CLIFTON, who was warden of the castle of Nottingham in the time of William Peverell, bastard son of William the Conqueror; and the elder line has been constantly seated at Clifton, near Nottingham, down to the present time. Sir GERVASE CLIFTON, temp. Hen. VII,, 14th in descent from Ahvaredus, had 2 sons, from the eldest of whom, ROBERT, the present baronet, descends; and the younger, Gervase, was of the Custom-house, London, and was grandfather of Gervase Clifton, who was summoned to parliament as a baron, 6 Jas. I., which barony is now vested in the earl of Darnley.

Sir GIIRVASE CLIFTON, of Clifton, 16th in descent from Alvaredus, and son of Robert above named, was knighted by Queen Elizabeth. He m. 1st, Mary, da. of John, lord Neville, of Chete, co. York, by whom he had no surviving male issue; and 2dly, Winifred, da. and h. of William Thwaites, by whom he had an only son, GEORGE, who d. in his father’s lifetime, Aug. 1587, leaving his wife, Winifred, da. of sir Anthony Thorold, of Marston, knt., enceinte of a son. Sir Gervase himself d. in Jan. following, and was succeeded in his estate by his grandson,

I. Sir GERVASE, 1st baronet, who was only four months old at his grandfather’s decease. He was made K. B. at the corona­tion of king James I., and afterwards advanced to the dignity of bart. He served in 8 parliaments co. Nottingham and Retford, and was. commissioner at Oxford and Newark for Charles the First. He was 7 times married; 1st, to Penelope, da. of Robert Rich, earl of Warwick, d. 1613; 2dly, to Frances, da. of Francis Clifford, earl of Cumberland, d. 1627; 3dly, to Mary, da. of John Egioke; 4thly, to Isabel, da. of — Meek; 5thly, to Anne, da. of sir Francis South, knt., d. 1630; 6thly, to Jane, da. of An­thony Eyre, d. 1655; and 7thly, to Alice, da. of Henry Hastings, earl of Huntingdon, who survived him, but d. in the same year with himself. By his 3d, 4th, 5th, and 7th wives, he had no issue. By his 1st he bad,

   3. Margaret, m. 1st, sir John South, knt.; 2dly, William Whichcote, esq. and 3dly, Robert, lord Hunsdon.

   5. Anne, in. sir Francis Rodes, knt.
   6. Letitia, m. Clifton Rodes, esq., his brother.
By his 6th wife, sir Gervase had,
    7. Robert, father of sir Gervase, 4th baronet.
    8. Charles, d. ann.
    9. Jane, in. Christopher Packe, esq.
  10. Elizabeth; 11. Mary.

Sir Gervase d. 1666, and was succeeded by his eldest son,

II. Sir GERVASE, m. Sarah, da. of Timothy Pusey, esq. but dying without issue 14 Jan. 1675, was succeeded by his nephew,

III. Sir WILLIAM, only surviving son of sir Clifford Clifton, knt., and Frances, his wife, da. of sir Heneage Finch, knt., recorder of London; which sir Clifford was the only son of sir Gervase by his 2d m. This sir William d. unm., leaving two sisters, his co-hs.: Catherine, m. sir John
Parsons, bart.; and Arabella, en. sir Francis Wheeler, knt., one of the admirals under king William, who was cast away near Cadiz. He was succeeded by his cousin,

IV. Sir GERVASE, eldest son of Robert Clifton, esq., son of sir Gervase, by Jane, his 6th wife. He en. Anne, da. of Dudley Bagnell, of Newry, in Ireland, esq., by whom (who survived him, and m. 2dly, William Blackburne, esq., and d. 1734) he had one da. Jane, a nun, and 15 sons, 10 of whom d. unm.; the others were,
    1. Sir ROBERT, 5th bart.
    2. William, m. Mrs. Wharton, by whom he had no issue.
    3. Alfred, first an officer in the French, afterwards in the Russian service.
    4. Dudley, who embraced a religious life.
    5. George, m. Anne, only da. and h. of Robert Sacheverell, esq., by whom he had 2 das. and 6 Sons.

Sir Gervase d. in March 1730-1, and was succeeded by his eldest son,

V. Sir ROBERT, m. Frances, da. of Nanfan Coote, earl of Bellamont, in the Peerage of Ireland (by lady Frances, his wife, youngest da. of Henry de Nassau, earl of Grantham, by whom he had an only da.,
1. Frances.
He m. 2dly, in June 1740, -, eldest da. and co-h. of sir Thomas Lombe, knt., alderman of London, by whom, who d. 1748, he had,
2. GERVA5E, his successor.
Sir Robert was created a K.B. 1725; d. 1762, and was succeeded by his only son,

VI. Sir GERVASE, m. a da. and sole h. of the Lloyds, in Co. Pembroke, and by her, who d. 1780, of a putrid fever, by her affectionate attendance on two of her sons, who laboured under that disorder, had issue,
1. ROBERT, present bart.
2. Gervase, d. 1779.
3. Juckes-Granville, who took the surname of Juckes, in addition to and after Clifton; m. 1st, 1794, Margaret, da. of James de Lancy, of Bath, esq., by

By whom had issue; and 2dly, 21 Aug. 1821, Marianne, da. of John Swynfen, of Swynfen-house, co Stafford, by whom also he has issue.
4. Arthur-Benjamin, col. in the army, and CE.
5. Frances, in. 1797, the rev. Robert Markham, archdeacon of York, son of the late archbishop of York.

Sir Gervase d. 26 Sept. 1815, and was succeeded by his son,

Arms-(See Plate 1). Sable, semée of cinquefoils, and a lion rampant, argent.
Crest-Out of a ducal coronet a demi peacock, per pale, argent and sable, his wings expanded counterchanged.
Motto- Tenez ie droit.
