Note:
The following incident took place near this cemetery in 1865. A soldier of the Confederate Army deserted and was making his way home when he met a 16 year old boy near the site of Hopewell church. While the rebel was talking to the boy, other soldiers came up and captured both of them. They charged the boy with aiding and abetting the deserter. (The deserter was an expert cannon gunner.) They hanged the boy and saved the deserter. After placing the rope around the boys nick they asked him if he had any thing to say before he died. The boy said, “Yes”, and I am told these were his last words. “I am not prepared to die. I am going straight to hell and I will be there to heap coals of fire upon your heads when you get there.” His body was buried in this cemetery. The names of both parties are withheld in order that the living may not be embarrassed.

I am also told that the grand father of the late Sash Kelly was the first one to be buried here in the late eighteenth century.

  1. kathryn–Did you find Christopher e. Phillips? I saw it on the cemetery names. My sister-in-law has a genealogy tie to John L. He married Etta dunlap. That would be her Great grandmother. Do you have any info ? We have the marriage date but think she died in 1906 or late 1905. We believe she and her 1st husband are buried in Oak Forest–no stones. If you know ANYTHING it would be helpful. If we can help you,let us know. Shirley.

  2. I’m looking for my great grandfather’s grave. His name was Christopher Ervin Phillips but may be under C E Phillips. He was born in 1848 and died in 1931 and is supposed to be buried in the Kelley graveyard between Black Rock and Imboden Arkansas.
