Enterprise, Wallowa County, Oregon
John A. Bookout passed away at his home in La Grande, Friday, Feb. 8, 1935. He and his wife went to La grande last fall and made it their temporary home after renting their Alder Slope farm to their son-in-law, Homer Eads. Funeral services were held yesterday in the Christian church in Enterprise, conducted by the pastor, Rev. C.N. Trout, and Rev. H.S. Fulton, and burial was in the Enterprise cemetery.
Mr. Bookout was born Jan. 1, 1878, in Huntsville, Ark., and came as a small boy to Oregon with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John A. Bookout, pioneers in Wallowa county. He spent the greater part of his life in Wallowa and Union counties, going to California several winters.
He was married to Ora B. Ownbey Dec., 17, 1902, and was survived by the widow and two children, Mrs. Homer L. Eads and Donald D. Bookout, also by two grandchildren, LaVera and Jack Eads, and one brother, W.R. Bookout of Freewater, and four sisters, Mrs. Martha Cornelison of Weston, Mrs. Mary Cornelison of Othello, Wash., Mrs. Florence Wagner of La Grande and Mrs. Ora Burnett of Pleasant Valley.
In 1912 he was converted and joined the Baptist church, and later affiliated with the Church Of God. His favorite passage in the Bible is found in john’s gospel, third chapter, verses 1 to 9.
Mrs. Bookout’s sister, Mrs. Myrtle Hearing, and daughter, were living with the family in La Grande and came back to Enterprise for the funeral. Also Mr. and Mrs. John O. McFetridge and their neice, Loretta McFetridge, came from Medical Springs.
Dee Bookout, the son, was reached in California where he had been working some months, and he also came home for the funeral.
