The Maumee River, and later, the Miami-Erie Canal which ran along side the river, was of great importance to the settlement of the area. Monclova is also the site of the "Battle of Fallen Timbers" fought by General "Mad Anthony" Wayne against the Indians in 1794 for control of the area.
