About Iowa Civil War Soldier Burial Records

At least 75,000 soldiers enlisted from the state of Iowa during the Civil War and thousands more who served from other states settled in Iowa following the Rebellion. This database currently contains a listing of over 18,800 of these service men (and a few women) who died and were buried in the state, or who enlisted from the state of Iowa and are buried elsewhere. In addition to those who served in the Union army, burials include those serving in the Confederate Army, the US Regular army, US Colored Troops and the Navy and Marines between 1861 and 1866.

Compiled from a variety of sources, including cemetery listings, obituaries, rolls of honor, and biographical and historical sketches, this database reveals a wealth of information regarding each decedent.

Researchers will find the soldier's name, birth and death dates and places, and final resting place. The majority of entries will also include the unit and enlistment information for the soldier as well as additional items such as names of parents, spouses, children and other biographical information.

This is an ongoing project to locate and document the burial locations of all the men who served from Iowa units as well as those from elsewhere who were laid to rest in Iowa's fertile soil.
