About Arkansas, U.S., County Marriages Index, 1837-1957

This database contains an index extracted from marriage records from Arkansas Courts of Common Pleas and county clerks.

What’s in the Index

County clerks recorded marriages in Arkansas before statewide registration began in 1917. This database is an index to digital images of original marriage records housed at various county courthouses in the State of Arkansas. Three types of records are indexed:

  • marriage books
  • marriage licenses
  • marriage returns (indicating that a marriage took place)

Details included in the records vary, with earlier records sometimes containing less information. Where included in the original records, this index may list the following:

  • name
  • age
  • residence (city, county, state)
  • spouse’s name and age and residence
  • marriage date
  • license date
  • marriage county
  • FHL film number

The FHL film number refers to a microfilm copy of the source held by the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah.
