About Sacramento, California, U.S., California Biographical Great Books, 1867, 1872

This database contains an index and images of index cards with biographical data extracted from the Sacramento County Great Register of Voters for the years 1867 and 1872.

The California Great Registers are lists of eligible voters compiled at the county level as required by the 1866 Registry Act. An 1872 law required that counties publish an index, or alphabetical listing, of all registered voters every two years. These voter registers are known as the Great Registers.

Information on the cards making up this database was extracted from the 1867 and 1872 registers for Sacramento County. The cards may contain

  • name
  • age
  • birthplace (nativity)
  • occupation
  • local residence by city or township
  • naturalization date or place
  • date of registration

These cards can be useful in correlating the naturalization date for many California immigrants, as well as providing a person’s age on the date of registration.
