About Genealogy of the Stokes Family : Descended From Thomas and Mary Stokes Who Settled in Burlington County, N.J. (Indexed)

Eight generations of the Thomas and Mary Stokes family who originally settled in Burlington County, New Jersey are recorded in this database. This compilation by Richard Haines is based on notes collected by his father George Haines as well as additional contributions from Stokes family members. George Haines began recording information on Stokes family genealogy during the early 1820s at the start of his medical practice close to the Burlington County area. The records are arranged by generation and include an abbreviations guide to the genealogical terms employed and three indexes organized by family names, ancestral lines, and individual profiles that include biographical notes. A brief history of the Stokes family origins, the family coat of arms, and motto is also included. On occasion a note accompanies the record when the validity of the information recorded was uncertain.

The first of the Stokes to set foot in America, Thomas had arranged to settle land purchased by his brother John who resided in London. The family’s decision to leave England reflects a larger emigration movement during this time period by the English Quaker population. Religious persecution and a call to spiritual pilgrimage motivated their resettlement.
