About Alabama, U.S., Civil War Muster Rolls, 1861-1865

Muster Rolls

Muster rolls provide a “roll call” for a military unit at a specified place and time. Both officers and enlisted men are listed, and often wounds, sickness, leave status, or other reasons for men being away from the unit are included.

About these Records

These rolls are for Confederate units formed in Alabama during the Civil War—though many operated outside of the state over the course of the war. The records include rolls for infantry, cavalry, artillery, reserves, navy, marines, and even out-of-state regiments. They typically include:

  • Name
  • Ranks
  • Locations
  • Unit
  • Commanding officer
  • Date the roll was taken
  • Age
  • Enlistment and payroll information

Using this database

The rolls in this database are searchable by roll date, name, and estimated birth year. Only muster rolls and similar records (such as payroll records) have been indexed for this collection, but other records from the source collection are included and are grouped by unit. You can browse these once you determine your ancestor’s unit.
