Hawaii, U.S., Arriving and Departing Passenger Lists, 1941-1948

This database is an index to passenger lists arriving at and departing from Hawaii between 1942-1948. In addition, the names found in the index are linked to actual images of the passenger lists, copied from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) microfilm (A3392 and A3411). Many passenger list forms, especially those from the twentieth century, were two pages long. This database is comprised of two record sets. The first contains airplane passenger lists departing from Honolulu, Hawaii between January 27, 1942 and July 1, 1948. Some crew lists are also included among these records. The second set of records contains over 7,300 index cards for Filipino contract laborers and their families who arrived by ship at Honolulu, Hawaii in 1946.

Airplane Passenger Lists:

The passengers found among these lists were primarily U.S. citizens. During the WWII years passengers were mostly U.S. military personnel headed for California. In later years passengers included civilians and destinations included California, the Philippines, China, Australia, and New Zealand.

Forms used for the airplane lists include Customs Form 7509 as well as a variety of airline-produced forms for both the passengers and crew members. Due to the variety of forms, the amount of information recorded about an individual will vary according to the form and the questions asked on it. The type of information that may be found on a form though, includes:

• Name of passenger
• Age
• Gender
• Marital status
• Occupation
• Citizenship (nationality)
• Passport Number
• Ultimate destination (city and state)
• Date and place of last arrival in the U.S.
• Ticket and baggage information
• Rank (for crew members)
• Date and airport of departure
• Date and airport of arrival
• Aircraft ID

These records are generally arranged in chronological order by date of departure. Many of the images included in this collection came from carbon copies of the originals. As a result, some images may appear to have a blurry look.

Filipino Contract Laborers:

In 1946 thousands of Filipino laborers were imported by ship into Hawaii to help work on Hawaii's sugar plantations, which were suffering from labor shortages as a result of WWII. The laborers included about 6,000 men. The laborers arrived on the S.S. Maunawili and their wives and children arrived on the S.S. Marine Falcon.

These index cards contain the following information:

• Passenger's name
• Age in years and months
• Gender
• Marital status (may appear combined with gender as M.M. (male, married) or M.S. (male, single), etc.)
• Date and ship of arrival
• Source information (book or volume number, page number, and line number of original information)

The index cards are generally arranged in alphabetical order according to surname.
